A Repair Shop Blamed a Power Surge

A man in Nuneaton took an old laptop to a repair shop on the high street after a storm knocked the power out twice in an evening. The shop could not get anything off the disk, told him they thought a surge had done it and suggested a specialist. He was open about what he actually wanted, which was the photographs and nothing else: about nine years of family pictures including his daughter's wedding. He had assumed a specialist meant somebody who would try harder with the same tools, and asked what would be different.

The shop was right about the cause and right to stop. A surge arriving through a laptop's supply passes into the drive's board and the components designed to take that hit are the first to go. That is what they are for. Diagnosing it correctly and declining to go further is a good outcome from a general repair shop, and considerably better than an afternoon of experiments with a bench power supply.

What a specialist has is not more determination but different parts. The answer to a destroyed board is another board, and the difficulty is that a drive of this age keeps values measured for its own mechanism in a small memory on that board. Fit a donor as it comes and the electronics work perfectly while every calibration number is somebody else's, so the drive spins and reads nothing.

Moving the memory across is the standard method, not a trick. The chip is lifted from the damaged board under hot air and refitted to the donor. It is fiddly, it needs magnification and a controlled iron, and it takes twenty minutes. After that the donor behaves as this drive's own board and the mechanism comes up as though nothing had happened.

The photographs were never in the path of the damage. Electricity reaching the board does not reach the recording surfaces, and the heads park when power is lost rather than crashing onto the platters. That is why a surge, alarming as it looks, is one of the better faults to have. The risk in this job was entirely in what somebody might do next with a bench supply and no current limit.

Under magnification the picture was textbook: a transient suppression component failed short, and the track feeding it burnt through, which is the ordinary signature of a surge and matched what the shop had guessed. The memory holding the drive's calibration values sat well away from the damage and was undamaged, which decided the method.

A matched donor board was sourced and the memory transferred under hot air. The drive was brought up on a current-limited supply so the first power-on could be watched rather than gambled on, and it spun, reached speed and identified itself correctly. Imaging ran behind a hardware write blocker on DeepSpar behind PC-3000 UDMA in one clean pass, and R-Studio was used to pull out the picture folders, which were rendered as thumbnails and checked rather than counted.

Nine years of photographs came back, wedding included, and with them a folder of scanned documents the owner had forgotten about that turned out to hold his late father's service record. He was given the pictures organised by the dates the camera had written rather than as one flat folder, which is the difference between a recovery and something usable.

One disk is £300 + VAT. Board work is electronics and named in the published exclusion, so 50% of the figure was settled upfront and the balance once he had seen the wedding pictures.

After a surge or a storm

Unplug the machine and leave the drive alone rather than testing it repeatedly to see whether it comes back. If a general repair shop has already told you they think a surge did it, that is useful information worth passing on, and you should ask whether they powered the drive after they formed that view. Do not buy a matching board online and fit it, because on anything made in the last twenty years the replacement arrives with the wrong calibration values and will not work, and the money is wasted. Keep the original board whatever happens, since it holds the only copy of those numbers and no laboratory can invent them. Never put a drive with visibly burnt components onto a supply that has no current limit. If it is a laptop drive, take it out and send the bare disk rather than the machine, and mention the storm, because a surge case and a wear case are opened with different expectations.
