Listed in Device Manager, Absent Everywhere

A small engineering firm in Rugby had a WD My Book in a cupboard that nobody had touched for years. It held the drawing archive from before they moved to a network share, and when a customer asked about a job from that era they went looking for it. Windows listed the unit in Device Manager but showed no capacity, no partitions and nothing in File Explorer. Held to the ear it made a noise for a few seconds and then fell silent. The office manager reported, accurately, that it had worked briefly when they last plugged it in years ago and then crashed.

Reading the fault

A named device with no size behind it is a very specific message. The enclosure of an external drive contains its own small circuit that speaks USB to the computer, and that circuit can introduce itself perfectly well without ever getting an answer from the disk it is bolted to. So Windows draws an entry, asks how big the storage is, receives nothing, and leaves the fields blank. The fault is behind the bridge, not in it.

Noise for a few seconds and then nothing is the mechanism giving up. Start-up is a routine with a timeout in it. If the platters do not reach speed the drive stops trying, and what you hear is that whole sequence, which is why the sound is short rather than continuous. People often describe it as the drive going to sleep. It is not sleeping, it has failed a test and stopped.

Years in a cupboard is a cause rather than an aggravating detail. A drive parked for a long spell in a warm room can bind at the landing zone, and the same thing happens to spindle bearings that have not turned since before the move. This unit had already given the firm a warning when it worked briefly and then crashed, which in hindsight was the same fault arriving.

The archive itself was never in question. Nothing in this pattern touches the recorded surfaces. Drawings written fifteen years ago are still where they were put, and the entire problem lies in the few hundred milliseconds at power-on when the mechanism has to move. That is why the honest advice was to stop trying it, and why the prognosis was good before the lid came off.

The disk came out of its plastic case, which is a two-minute job on the bench and a fingernail-breaking one at a desk, and went onto a current-limited supply. The trace showed the spindle drawing hard and then being cut off by the drive's own timeout, twice, which matched the sound the office manager had described down to the length of it.

Under laminar flow the sliders were bound at the landing zone with no scoring beneath them, and the spindle turned freely once they were lifted clear on a ramp tool. Donor parts were prepared and were not needed. Imaging ran on DeepSpar behind PC-3000 UDMA in a single pass with no weak regions found. R-Studio read the filesystem straight out of the image, and a sample from each drawing format was opened in a viewer before anything was written to fresh media.

The drawing archive came back complete, including a set of scanned paper originals the firm had assumed were only on the disk that failed. It went home on new media with a second copy, and the empty enclosure went back in the same parcel because there was never anything wrong with it.

One disk is £300 + VAT. This needed the lid off under laminar flow, which is physical work under the published terms, so 50% of it was settled upfront and the balance after the firm had opened the drawings themselves.

A drive Windows can see but cannot measure

Read the blank fields as a clue rather than a glitch. If Device Manager lists the unit but Disk Management shows no size, the enclosure is talking and the disk inside is not, and no amount of reinstalling drivers, changing letters or trying another port will alter that. Do not accept an offer to initialise it, because initialising writes a fresh partition table over the one you want. Do not run it repeatedly to see whether it catches, since each attempt loads a mechanism that is already failing to move. An external in its own case travels whole and is best sent that way with its cable, rather than prised apart at home with a butter knife. Say in the note how long it has been in a cupboard, because a drive that has sat unused for years fails differently from one that was in daily use last week.

What this job cost, and on what terms. This one was charged at £300 + VAT, the figure agreed in writing before any work began. Paying for a job like this one. This file sits in the half the guarantee does not reach.
