A family in Bedworth had an Acer laptop old enough that nobody could remember buying it, and it stopped booting. A friend who is good with computers took the disk out, put it in an enclosure and tried it on three machines, where it spun up, sat there and was never offered as a drive. He gave it back and said it was dead. The only thing the family actually wanted was the photographs, most of them of a grandmother who died the year before, and they asked whether a second opinion was worth the postage.

The friend did everything right and reached the limit of what a computer can ask. Removing the disk, putting it in an enclosure and trying three machines is a sound elimination, and it proves the fault is in the drive. What it cannot do is get past the point where the drive refuses to introduce itself, because an ordinary computer only knows how to ask a disk what it is and wait for an answer.
Every disk keeps its own instruction manual on its own platters. A reserved region holds the tables the drive needs to work: the map of its heads, the list of sectors it has retired, its calibration values. It reads that before it will speak to anything. If part of it has degraded, the drive spins, tries, fails and stops, which from outside looks exactly like death and is not.
Professional equipment differs in what it is allowed to ask, not in how hard it pulls. A drive has a maintenance interface for the factory that made it, and a bench tool can use it to read those tables directly and see which are damaged. Most of them exist in more than one copy on the platters, so a broken one can very often be rebuilt from the drive's own spare rather than invented.
This is repair work, and it is logical repair work. Nothing is opened, nothing is unsoldered and no part of the mechanism is replaced. What changes is a table on the reserved region, and the user area is not written to at all. Under the published terms that keeps the guarantee, which surprises people who assume anything involving the word firmware must be the expensive kind of job.
On PC-3000 UDMA the drive answered in its maintenance mode straight away, which is already more than it would give any ordinary machine. Reading the service area showed one module damaged and another partly unreadable, both from an area that is rewritten during normal operation, which is a common age-related failure on drives of that generation.
The damaged modules were rebuilt from the redundant copies the drive itself keeps, and it then completed its start-up and reported its correct capacity for the first time in months. Nothing was written to the user area at any stage. Imaging ran on DeepSpar behind a write blocker with a scattering of slow sectors near the middle of the disk that were left for a second targeted pass, and R-Studio read the filesystem from the finished image.
About fourteen thousand photographs came back, along with a folder of video clips nobody knew existed and the scanned order of service from the grandmother's funeral. Eleven pictures in the slow region were damaged and were listed by name so the family could look for prints instead of wondering.
One disk is £300 + VAT. Firmware and service-area repair count as logical under the published terms, so no fix, no fee applied here and the invoice waited until the family had been through the pictures.
Take the diagnosis seriously and the verdict less so. A friend who removes the disk, tries it in an enclosure across several machines and reports that it spins but never appears has done genuinely useful work and has correctly located the fault inside the drive. What that test cannot distinguish is a mechanism that has failed from a drive whose own configuration has become unreadable, and the second of those is repairable without the lid ever coming off. Ask them to stop at that point rather than trying repair utilities, which cannot help a drive that is not being offered as storage, and to leave it unplugged. Keep the enclosure and the caddy, but send the bare disk rather than the laptop. If somebody has already written down the model and the capacity from the label, send that too, because on service-area work knowing exactly which drive it is saves a real amount of time.
What this job cost, and on what terms. This one was charged at £300 + VAT, the figure agreed in writing before any work began. Paying for a job like this one. Nothing here called for the disk to be opened, a board rebuilt or a chip lifted off, which puts the work on the logical side of the line and under no fix, no fee. Files back, invoice follows; nothing back, nothing owed, and the media goes home either way. Four sorts of work sit outside that promise and only those four: DVR jobs, forensic jobs, chip-level work, and electronic or mechanical failure. The rest keep it, firmware and service-area repair included — both are logical jobs whatever their reputation suggests.
