A beep is a stalled motor, not a verdict on your files, and a unit that refuses to appear has more often lost the electronics in its case than anything on the disk. Under the aluminium sits an ordinary Seagate or Toshiba mechanism, and that mechanism is what comes out and goes onto the bench. If you hold a live Rescue plan, use it first; if you do not, one drive is £300 + VAT.
Any single LaCie is £300 + VAT. Nothing is charged for the examination, and the figure goes in writing before a screw moves — no fix, no fee on logical faults, 50% upfront on mechanical ones.
Equipment sold to people who work away from a desk collects the hazards of the road, and LaCie's catalogue shows it. Six patterns account for very nearly everything the brand sends to Oxford, and they are set out here in roughly the order the phone rings.
Counting the beeps means counting failed start attempts. Something is holding the platters still — stiffened bearings most often, a head stack resting on the surface next — and the board goes on asking anyway. The cause being mechanical is what makes a different lead or a stronger adaptor irrelevant.
Orange rubber does its job at the level of the case. Inside it the assembly is sealed and unsprung, so an impact taken while the platters are turning brings the heads down onto the surface. Every read attempt afterwards presses that contact a little further in.
Enclosure electronics live shorter lives than the disks they surround. A mains-powered d2 or Porsche Design unit that has gone entirely silent has usually lost its supply, its socket or its bridge chip, and the drive sitting behind that failure is normally in perfect health.
On much of what LaCie ships now the USB circuitry is printed onto the drive's own board instead of a separate card. Strip the case and nothing standard presents itself, which is where do-it-yourself stops: the only road to that mechanism runs through the interface it was made with.
Those two-disk desktop units were sold configurable, so the answer depends on the setting. Striped, losing one disk silences the entire volume, because half of every file cannot be reassembled into anything. Mirrored, the survivor sets the ceiling. Both disks travel either way.
Power light on, drive sounding entirely healthy, and the operating system proposing to initialise the volume. That combination points at a damaged file system rather than damaged hardware. It is the least expensive class of LaCie job and the only one on this page that keeps no fix, no fee.
A fair number of people reach this page having searched for LaCie Rescue Data Recovery Services, so that deserves answering before anything else. Rescue is Seagate's own data recovery plan, sold alongside the drive: some LaCie units ship with a term of it included and on others it is added at the point of purchase. If you hold a live plan against the serial number on the base of your drive, use it. You have already paid for it, and there is nothing on this page that improves on a service you own.
Two things are worth knowing before you go hunting for paperwork. A plan of that sort has to be in place before the failure — it is bought with the drive rather than after it has stopped — so a second-hand unit, a drive whose term has run out, or one that never carried a plan is not covered by it. And redeeming a plan is a claims process with its own registration step and its own queue. Check the serial and the dates on Seagate's own site first. If the plan is live, that is your route. If it is not, or if the timescale does not suit you, this bench is the alternative: one LaCie drive is £300 + VAT, the examination costs nothing, and the figure is fixed in writing before anything is opened.
No LaCie unit has ever contained a LaCie disk, because the company does not make disks. It has been part of Seagate for well over a decade, and what sits behind almost every enclosure is a standard Seagate or Toshiba mechanism with a model number anybody can look up. LaCie's contribution is the industrial design: the aluminium, the rubber, the orange bumper. For a recovery that is entirely good news, since a failed unit is handled as whatever drive is actually inside it, with the same donor shelf standing behind that model as behind any other.
It also sets up the question the bench asks first. Has the packaging failed, or the disk? Packaging means the bridge board, the USB socket or the mains circuitry on a desktop model, and it fails more often than people expect; where that is the trouble, the disk is untouched and the work stays logical and cheap. Disk means heads, motor, firmware or sectors going soft across the platters, and that calls for filtered air, donor parts and the hours both of those consume. Telling one from the other is the bulk of what a free examination is for, and it is done before any figure reaches paper.
Time the gap between two beeps and it comes out at roughly a second. That interval is the drive's own retry timer. Power reaches the board, the board instructs the spindle to turn, the platters stay exactly where they are, the attempt is abandoned before the motor cooks itself, and the sequence starts over. What you are listening to is a motor straining at something that has no intention of moving, repeated for as long as the unit is left plugged in.
Two conditions hold platters still. Bearings gum up, which is what becomes of a drive that spent a year in a drawer or took a hard knock against a door frame on the way to a shoot. Or the head stack has come down onto the platter surface and stuck fast there, which is what a portable does to itself if it is dropped while running. Both are mechanical, and that one word disposes of every remedy people try at home: a shorter cable, a different port, a powered hub, a mains adaptor with more amps behind it. Nothing on that list turns a seized spindle, and each additional retry sets a jammed assembly grinding against itself.
The repair is physical work in filtered air. The lid comes off, the head stack is lifted clear on a comb cut for that family of drives, and the platters then either turn in the original body or move across into a matched donor. Only once the mechanism runs steadily is it imaged, sector by sector, and your files are extracted from that image rather than from the drive itself. Silence is a different diagnosis that gets folded into this one constantly: a mains-powered d2 or 2big with no light and no noise whatever has usually lost its supply or its bridge, and the disk behind it is generally untouched.
Every guide suggesting you strip the shell and drop the disk into a caddy was written for a generation of LaCie units that no longer dominates the shelf. On those, the aluminium really did hide an ordinary SATA drive and the trick really did work. The design moved on: across much of the current LaCie and Seagate range the USB electronics are laid out on the drive's own circuit board, so there is no separate bridge card to bypass and no SATA connector waiting underneath.
The consequence runs deeper than opening a case for nothing. Where one of those combined boards fails, a donor board by itself is frequently not enough, because the board carries the translation that makes the media legible and, on some models, a key unique to that individual unit. Recovering one is a question of the right tooling rather than the right screwdriver. And if the drive beeps or clicks, the age of the case stops mattering at all — the fault is sealed inside the mechanism, and taking the shell off brings nobody an inch closer to it.
The Rugged, orange and rubberised, is the one that arrives damaged. It travels in a camera bag and the bumper does precisely what it claims, protecting a case, while the sealed assembly inside swings on its own mountings. Dropped idle it usually survives; dropped mid-write it usually does not. Its Rugged SSD relatives have nothing turning inside them and fail the other way about, without warning and all at once.
The d2 is the upright mains-powered single-disk unit that sits behind a monitor for years and then declines to start one Monday; more often than not the enclosure or its supply has given out rather than the disk. Porsche Design units — plain aluminium, desktop and mobile — are the range likeliest to arrive as a failed bridge with an entirely healthy Seagate behind it. The older Mobile and Blade drives are slim shells around ordinary 2.5-inch disks, and they click for the same ordinary reasons.
The 2big stands apart from all of them, because it holds two disks and shipped configurable. The first question about one is how it was set up: striped, a single failed member takes the volume down with it; mirrored, whatever the survivor holds sets the ceiling. Both disks come either way, each marked with the bay it was in, and a 2big is quoted as an array from £500 + VAT.
Photographers and video editors first, then architects, and then households where a single shelf holds every scanned photograph the family owns. It comes by post, which treats hardware that has already stopped behaving far better than a car journey does: padded, tracked and insured for the whole trip. As a rule the storage comes out and the machine stays where it is. That applies to a laptop, a tower, an iMac and to the recorder sitting under a counter. Taking equipment apart is not something this bench does, and a repair shop will free a drive in a few minutes. Two things go the other way: an external drive stays sealed inside its own case, and a NAS travels as a complete unit with its disks still in their bays.
