Can You Solder a Bent USB Drive Back Together

An agricultural contractor working out of Southam rang to ask whether a bent USB drive could be soldered back together so the files could be copied onto a new one. It had gone through a wash cycle in a coat pocket and come out with the connector folded most of the way over. On it were spray records, field maps and the paperwork for an assurance inspection due in three weeks. He was clear about what he wanted, which was the records rather than the drive, and that turned out to be the distinction the whole job rested on.

The question people ask and the question that matters are different ones. Can it be soldered is a question about the drive. What is on it is a question about the memory, and those are separate components joined by a few fragile traces. Once the second question is the one being answered, the connector stops being interesting and the job gets both cheaper and much more likely to succeed.

Rebuilding a bent connector rarely gives anything worth having. The joints tear the pads off the board when they go, and the traces behind them are usually broken as well. Wiring around that is possible and takes hours, and the result is a drive that reads once on a bench and cannot be trusted to read twice. Nobody would put an assurance inspection's paperwork through a connection like that.

Taking the memory off is not a repair and does not pretend to be. The chip comes off under hot air, is read on a programmer designed for the purpose, and the drive it came from is finished. That is a fair trade when the drive costs a few pounds and the records on it took a season to accumulate, and it is a poor trade if the drive still works, which is why nobody should be talked into it early.

Water in the wash was less of a problem than the bend. Flash memory that has been through clean water and then dried thoroughly is generally fine, because there is nothing in it that corrodes in a few minutes. The damage that mattered was purely mechanical, and it happened when the drive was pressed against the inside of a drum rather than when it got wet.

Under magnification the picture was unambiguous: the connector shell had rotated far enough to tear two of its anchor points out of the board, one data trace was open and a second was cracked. Nothing was powered, because a board with damaged traces and residual moisture is a good way to destroy a memory that is currently intact.

The memory came off under hot air and read on a specialist programmer, several passes of raw pages agreeing with one another. Reconstructing the controller's arrangement took the bulk of the day: the interleave across the dies, the block ordering and the error correction all had to be resolved before a filesystem became visible. Once the volume assembled, the maps and spreadsheets were opened rather than counted, and the whole set was written onto the new drive he had sent in with the old one.

The spray records, the field maps and the inspection paperwork all came back, along with two seasons of photographs he had forgotten were on there. They went onto the replacement drive he supplied, which is the outcome he asked for at the start, even though the route to it was not the one he had in mind.

A USB stick is £250 + VAT. Lifting a memory chip is chip-level work and falls under the published exclusion, so 50% of the quote was settled upfront and the balance once he had the records in front of him.

A bent or broken USB drive

Do not straighten it, and do not plug it in to see whether it still works, particularly if it has been wet. Bending the connector back puts a second load through joints that have already torn and can crack a trace that was merely stretched. If it has been through water, leave it somewhere dry and warm for a few days before anyone does anything with it at all, and resist a hairdryer, which drives moisture further in. Be clear in your own mind about what you want back. If it is the files, then the drive is expendable and the job is straightforward. If you were hoping to have the stick itself mended and returned working, that is a different service and generally not worth paying for on a component that costs a few pounds new. Send it in a small rigid box, include any piece that has snapped off, and send the replacement drive at the same time if you want the results on your own media.
