A second-year at Coventry University had bought a pen drive from a market stall and noticed from the first day that it went into a laptop port harder than it should. It worked for eight months. Then one afternoon in the library it stopped appearing, with no warning message and nothing in Disk Management at all. His lecture notes for two modules and a draft dissertation chapter were on it, and the deadline was eleven days away. He tried three machines before he rang, which was sensible, and had not tried any repair software, which was more sensible still.

Absent from Disk Management means the drive never got a word in. There is a real difference between a stick that appears with no filesystem and one that does not appear at all. The first has a working controller and a broken index, which is a software problem. The second has not managed to enumerate, so either it is getting no power or the data lines are not making contact, and both of those are hardware.
The tight fit was the fault arriving in slow motion. A USB plug that has to be forced transfers that force into the shell, and the shell is soldered to a board four or five millimetres square. Every insertion flexed it. Eight months of that is more than enough to open a pad, and the pattern is common enough on cheaply built drives that a caller mentioning stiffness will usually be told to expect exactly this.
Repairing the connector is not what happens, and it is worth explaining why. Even where a pad can be rebuilt, the aim is not a working pen drive; the aim is the notes. Reading the memory directly skips the connector, the board trace and the controller in one step and cannot be undone by another poor solder joint later. The stick does not come home usable, and it was never going to be trusted again in any case.
Reading flash directly is not the same as copying a file. A controller scatters data across the memory in a pattern of its own choosing, interleaving pages across dies and moving blocks as they wear, and there is no map published anywhere. What comes off the programmer is that raw scatter, and the work is reconstructing the arrangement well enough that a filesystem appears in it. That reconstruction is the job; the desoldering is ten minutes of it.
The casing came apart under a stereo microscope. That is not a drive that will read again on any port on any machine, and it explained why three laptops had all said nothing.

The lecture notes came back in full and so did the dissertation chapter, including a revision from the day before the failure that he had assumed was lost with the rest. He had it four days before the deadline. The pen drive did not go home, because there was nothing left of it worth returning, and he was told to buy a better one.
A pen drive or a memory card is £250 + VAT. Lifting a memory chip is chip-level work, which the published exclusion names, so 50% of the quote was settled upfront and the balance once he had opened the files.
Treat stiffness as a warning rather than a quirk. If a stick has to be pushed hard, the force is going straight into four small solder pads, and the day it stops being recognised is the day one of them finally lets go. Copy anything you care about off it now, while it still works, and keep the copy somewhere that is not a second stick from the same packet. If it has already failed, check Disk Management once: an entry with no filesystem is a different fault from no entry at all, and knowing which you have saves the bench a step. Do not try to wiggle it into position or bend the shell back, and do not let anyone reflow the joints with a soldering iron and no magnification, because a bridged data line is how a recoverable stick becomes a shorted one. Post it in a small rigid box; an envelope arrives with the casing crushed more often than you would think.
