A supplier to the motor trade with a unit at Whitley keeps drawings, inspection reports and photographs of rejected parts on an external drive that moves between the quality office and a laptop on the shop floor. It stopped appearing in File Explorer on either machine. Disk Management listed it as unknown, not initialised and zero bytes, and offered to initialise it, which the quality manager sensibly declined. He tried four cables and every port in the building first, and asked for everything to be dealt with by email because he is rarely at a desk.

Zero bytes is not an estimate, it is the drive declining to answer. When Windows lists a disk it asks how large it is. A drive that cannot read its own configuration has no figure to give, so the field is filled with nought and the disk is described as unknown. The partition table has not been erased and the files have not gone; the question was simply never answered.
Not initialised is a description, and the offer that follows it is a trap. Windows means it has not been given a partition structure it can read. Accepting the offer writes a brand new one, which lands on top of the existing table and makes the real layout much harder to reconstruct. It is the single most damaging button on that screen and it is presented as the obvious next step.
Four cables and every port in the building was a reasonable test and a dead end. The drive was enumerating throughout, which means the cable, the port and the bridge were all working. Once a device is being listed at all, the connection has been proved and the fault is further in. That is worth knowing before anyone spends an afternoon on it.
Firmware work keeps the guarantee, which surprises people. Nothing is opened, nothing is unsoldered, no part is replaced and the user area is never written to. The repair is to tables the drive keeps for its own use, rebuilt from copies the drive itself carries. Under the published terms that is logical work, and it is treated exactly as a deleted file or a broken filesystem would be.

Say no to the initialise prompt and keep saying no, because it is offering to write a new partition structure over the one that describes your files. Then unplug it. Do not try more cables once the drive has appeared in Disk Management at all, since being listed proves the connection is fine and the fault is inside the drive. Do not run a partition repair tool, do not create a new volume and do not let a disk utility write a fresh table for you, because all three make the reconstruction harder and none of them address a drive that cannot read its own configuration. A drive in this state is often in good physical health, which is why it is worth handling carefully rather than writing off. Send the unit whole if it is an external in its own enclosure, with the cable, and mention exactly what Disk Management said, since the wording distinguishes several quite different faults.
What this job cost, and on what terms. This one was charged at £300 + VAT, the figure agreed in writing before any work began. Paying for a job like this one.
