A Beeping Laptop Disk That Would Not Turn

A retired man in Nuneaton had kept the same laptop disk through two machines, moving it across when the first one died. It held his correspondence, thirty years of household paperwork and the only copy of a family tree he had spent four winters assembling. Fitted to either laptop it produced the same short run of beeps at switch-on and then went quiet. He had already worked out that the disk rather than the laptop was at fault, which is more diagnosis than most callers arrive with, and he suspected the reading mechanism inside had jammed.

Reading the fault

His diagnosis was closer than he thought and better than most. Trying two laptops removes the host, the port and the cable from the argument in one move, and once those are gone the fault is inside the casing by elimination. He described it as the reader being stuck, which is a lay way of putting something quite precise: the heads that read the surface had come to rest on it and would not let go.

A beep is a report from the motor and says nothing about the data. Every drive of this kind runs a small routine at power-on that spins the platters, checks whether they reached speed, and retries if they did not. On many models the retry is audible as a short tone. That the tone exists at all means the circuit is alive and the supply is adequate; what is missing is movement, and movement is a mechanical question.

Stiction is a storage fault, not a wear fault. Heads sit on a landing area when the drive is parked. Leave a disk unmoved in a warm cupboard for a few years and the lubricant on the surface can bind the slider to the platter well enough that the motor cannot break it free. Nothing has worn out and nothing has been damaged; the parts are simply stuck together, and the drive has no way of telling you that in words.

Repetition is where these jobs are lost. Each retry puts torque through a head resting on the recording surface. A handful of attempts is harmless. An evening of switching it on and off in the hope it frees itself starts to abrade exactly the layer the family tree is written in, and by then a routine job has become the scored-platter job that sits elsewhere in this set. He had tried it perhaps six times in total.

The disk went to a current-limited supply before anything else, which allows one start-up to be watched as a curve instead of guessed at from a noise. The trace showed current climbing to the limit and holding there with no step down to a running speed, which is a stall rather than a supply problem or a dead motor. That reading was enough to justify opening it.

Under laminar flow the sliders were sitting on the landing zone with the tell-tale bloom around them that binding leaves behind. They were lifted clear with a ramp tool and the platters were then examined across the full radius, which found no scoring at all, the reward for stopping after six attempts. The spindle turned freely by hand afterwards. Imaging ran on DeepSpar behind PC-3000 UDMA in one pass with the head map monitored, and R-Studio read the filesystem from the image.

What went back

Everything came back. The correspondence, the scanned household paperwork and the family tree all read out of the first pass with no unreadable sectors anywhere on the disk, which is the usual outcome when a stalled drive is caught early. A second copy went out on separate media at his request so the family tree is no longer a single point of failure.

One disk is £300 + VAT. Opening it under laminar flow put the job on the physical side of the published terms, so 50% of the figure was settled upfront and the remainder only after he had his papers.

A drive that beeps instead of spinning up

Stop asking it. The tone is a motor that has been told to turn and cannot, and every repeat loads a stationary mechanism a little further, which is the one kind of harm an owner can do without a screwdriver. Freezing it does nothing except add condensation to the problem, and the various tricks involving a sharp tap are how platters get scored. If the drive is inside a laptop, take it out and send the bare disk rather than the machine, since dismantling equipment is not work this bench does. Wrap it so nothing can shift in transit, use a rigid box rather than a padded envelope, and when you write the note say roughly how many times it has been powered since the trouble started. That number changes the prognosis more than the make or the model does.

What this job cost, and on what terms. This one was charged at £300 + VAT, the figure agreed in writing before any work began. Paying for a job like this one. This file sits in the half the guarantee does not reach. Four sorts of work are excluded from no fix, no fee and there are no others: DVR jobs, forensic jobs, chip-level work, and electronic or mechanical failure.
