No Operating System, and a New Clicking

A wedding and function DJ working across Coventry had his laptop shut down on its own during a Friday setup. On the restart it announced that there was no operating system, and he tried again perhaps a dozen times before he noticed a noise from inside that he had never heard before, a soft repeated click. A friend told him to stop immediately, which was the best advice he got all week. He had two bookings that weekend and about eleven years of tracks, edits and set lists on the machine.

Reading the fault

The message on the screen was about the disk, not about Windows. A machine looks for a boot loader in a specific place and reports no operating system when it cannot read one. That happens if the software is genuinely missing and it also happens if the disk cannot deliver a single sector. From the outside those look identical, which is why the same message sends some people to a reinstall and others to a laboratory.

The clicking settles the argument instantly. Software does not click. That sound is the head assembly swinging to a reference track, finding nothing it recognises, retreating to a stop and trying again, and the regularity of it is the giveaway. A drive that has lost its software is silent. A drive that clicks has a mechanical problem and nothing installed on it will fix that.

A dozen restarts is roughly the point at which luck runs out. Each attempt drags a failing head across the surface and each one has a chance of taking a piece of the recording layer with it. He stopped at twelve because a friend told him to. Owners who keep going through an evening, on the reasonable theory that it might catch, are the reason some of these jobs come back partial.

The service area is the piece most people have never heard of. Every disk keeps its own configuration on the platters in a reserved region, and it reads that before it will speak to the machine at all. Damaged heads cannot get to it, so the drive never introduces itself and every layer above assumes there is nothing there. The library is untouched a few millimetres away the entire time.

The disk came out of the laptop and went onto a current-limited supply, never near a host machine. The trace showed a spin-up to full speed followed by a repeating pattern of seek attempts, which is a head fault rather than a motor or supply problem and ruled out the cheaper possibilities in about a minute.

Under laminar flow one head was visibly damaged at the slider and a second was contaminated. Both surfaces were checked at magnification across the full radius, which found light marking on one platter over a narrow band and nothing elsewhere, a good result for twelve attempts. Matched donor heads went in, the alignment was set, and imaging ran on DeepSpar behind PC-3000 UDMA with the marked band left until last. R-Studio then read the filesystem from the image.

The library came back, tracks, edits and set lists together, along with the folder of client requests that mattered more to his business than the music did. About forty files sat on the marked band and came back damaged; they were listed, and all but three could be replaced from the shops he had bought them from.

One disk is £300 + VAT. Opening it and fitting donor parts is physical work under the published exclusion, so 50% of the figure was settled upfront and the balance once he had played a sample himself.

Stop restarting it. The temptation is enormous, because each attempt takes ten seconds and might be the one that works, but a clicking disk is a mechanism failing repeatedly against a surface and the odds get worse with every try rather than better. Do not boot from a recovery stick and do not run the repair option, since both write to a disk that cannot reliably read. Do not reinstall the operating system, which is the single suggestion most likely to be made to you and would put fresh files exactly where your own ones are. If the disk is in a laptop, take it out and send the bare unit rather than the machine. Say how many times it was restarted after the noise began, because that number bears directly on how much surface damage the bench should expect to find.

What this job cost, and on what terms. This one was charged at £300 + VAT, the figure agreed in writing before any work began. Paying for a job like this one.
