A small haulage operator based near Rugby keeps driver hours, tachograph downloads and maintenance records on a USB stick that lives in the office and goes to the accountant twice a year. The tip got bent when a filing drawer was shut on it. Since then the light on the end flashes red every time it goes into a port and the drive never loads, on the office machine, on a laptop or on the accountant's computer. The owner had concluded it was physically damaged, which was correct, and assumed that meant the records were gone, which was not.

A light is the least informative symptom a USB drive produces. The indicator is wired to the supply, so it comes on as soon as the two power pins make contact. Data travels on a different pair. A flashing light therefore says the drive has electricity and is trying to start, and says nothing whatever about whether the computer can hear it, which is why three machines all behaved identically.
Red flashing is usually the drive failing its own start-up, not a warning code. Most sticks simply blink while they initialise. If the controller cannot complete that process, or cannot get a word to the host, the blinking carries on and never settles. Owners read it as an error signal because it is red, but on most designs the colour was chosen by whoever specified the part.
The bend explains why the two halves of the drive disagree. A USB plug has four blades of different lengths, arranged so power connects before data. Distort the shell and it is entirely possible for the longer supply blades to keep touching while the shorter data blades no longer align. That is precisely what the microscope showed, and it is the ordinary result of a drawer being shut on a stick.
Straightening it is the thing not to do. Bending metal back work-hardens it and generally cracks whatever joint held it to the board, and a stick that could be read at chip level in an hour turns into one where the memory has been stressed. If the drive is the only copy, the value of a home repair attempt is very low and the downside is total.
The stick came apart under magnification. Two contact blades were bent upwards and one anchor point had torn away from the board, leaving a joint that would flex under any insertion. There was nothing wrong with the memory package, no cracking and no sign of heat, so the fault was entirely in the front third of the device.
The memory was lifted under hot air and read on a specialist programmer across several agreeing passes. Reconstructing the controller's arrangement took most of the work, as usual: interleave, block order and error correction all had to be resolved before a directory appeared. The volume then assembled without losses, and a sample of the tachograph downloads was opened in the software the accountant uses before anything was written to fresh media.
The driver hours, the tachograph downloads and the maintenance records all came back, covering four years and including a period the firm needed for an enquiry that was already under way. The stick did not go home. The owner was advised that compliance records held on one USB drive in a drawer is a policy rather than an accident waiting to happen, and now takes a copy to the accountant quarterly.

Read the light as evidence of power and nothing else. If the drive lights and does not appear on three different computers, the fault is in the drive, and trying a fourth machine only wastes an afternoon. Do not straighten a bent tip, do not file or bend the contacts, and do not push it in harder to make it seat, because all of those load joints that are already torn. Ignore any software that promises to make an undetected drive appear, since nothing running on the computer can reach a device that is not communicating. If the records on it matter to a business, treat this as the moment to change how they are stored rather than only as a job to be fixed. Post the stick in a small rigid box with the cap if it has one, and mention what it was doing when it stopped working, since a drive damaged in a drawer and a drive that died mid-copy need different starting assumptions.
