A laptop port is not a patient instrument. It supplies power within a tolerance, waits a short while for the device to introduce itself and moves on if nothing arrives. A drive that has become slow at starting up will miss that window every time, on every machine, and the owner concludes it is dead. It is not dead; it is late, and being late is fatal in a conversation with a fixed timeout.
Four machines behaving identically is meaningful and is often misread. It rules out the computers, which is what the owner took from it, and it also rules out a coincidence of ports and cables. What it does not establish is how badly the drive has failed, because every one of those four tests asked the same question in the same way and gave up after the same interval.
